Someone (I think Roman) posted that they thought you had the RGB / BGR ordering problem, did you check that out? Also, it did sound a lot like you might have had the wrong image depth or something - again, worth a look, I think. FWIW, I have only ever written image data to files in png and jpeg format, never to RAM, and it has always worked fine, so I don't really know what else to suggest.
