Yup - I guess that ties in with my recollection (hazy though it is...)
In my dockable toolbar widget, when I undocked the toolbar it became a
window in its own right, and IIRC that was problematic under OSX as I
was assuming the widget already *was* a window when really it was not...
Whereas under X11 and W32 it more or less was, so things Just Worked.
I worked around it by nesting things in groups instead, and
creating/deleting the floating window when the toolbar undocked/docked.
Worked.

But otherwise, the window-in-a-window stuff worked fine.
