Yes, it needs to be in the compiler command, though I don't know what the OP's compile command looked like. That's why I suggested explicitly adding it to the CXXFLAGS (though actually doing so is generally advised against - the preferred solution is only to use it for files that actually need it...) > but I can see it in my compiler command lines as well. It sounds (based on the version in Duncan's post) as if he has an older Centos but a newer gcc than Duncan has, so things may have been updated from standard - I wonder if there's some OS / gcc / binutils mismatch or something that might cause this?
