Yes, it needs to be in the compiler command, though I don't know what
the OP's compile command looked like.

That's why I suggested explicitly adding it to the CXXFLAGS (though
actually doing so is generally advised against - the preferred solution
is only to use it for files that actually need it...)

Ah. OK, well then I'd hope the OP's compile comamnd would be OK too,

Hmm. Tricky.

Maybe there is a problem with his toolchain then?
It sounds (based on the version in Duncan's post) as if he has an older
Centos but a newer gcc than Duncan has, so things may have been updated
from standard - I wonder if there's some OS / gcc / binutils mismatch or
something that might cause this? Just wondering...
