Again, not quite what you are asking but... Have you considered looking at one of the trackball implementations? If you are only interested in rotating and zooming then this might be enough for what you want to do. There's fl-arc-glwindow at http://www.fltk.org/links.php?V134 but the FLTK Trackball link seems to have disappeared. I've poked about with various trackball and quaternion packages in the past, but don't remember their relative merits.
