There are a number of initialisation steps that are skipped if you call show(); rather than show(argc,argv); that first time, though they are more cosmetic than harmful... If you call Fl::get_system_colors(); near the start of your code, before you call show() for the first time, most of the side-effects can be eliminated. It's maybe not a recommended approach, but it will work. It does (of course) mean that none of the standard X11 or fltk command line options will work, but it sounds like you will not use them, so that may not matter.
