Hmm, it sounds like it may be - and I have no idea how to address that. Is XFT a possibility on your platform? It might be worth a try since it handles the fonts somewhat differently, it might not exhibit the delay. Is your system memory constrained? That may have an impact for large files. If so, something like adding more swap or something might make a difference in that case.
