I found the answer by comparing my xorg.conf with one an a working twinview
system. My xorg.conf was omitting the lines
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
in Section "Files"
It works after I added them. Apparently libglx.so wasn't getting used.
