Oh! Wait a minute... Are you, by any chance, using the "plastic" theme? If so, that may be the problem - it messes with the colour of the button faces as it blends the theme in, and there may be no way around that. Well, other than not using the plastic theme...! Use the "gtk+" theme instead!
