Note that the forums are not, in fact forums: rather they are a web front-end to a mailing list. If you want something more akin to the immediate "push" nature of social media then signing up for the mailing list is probably the closest you'll get. Try it, you might even like it. As far as speeding collaboration: I doubt it - work proceeds at the pace it proceeds, and is generally resource limited.
