Hey Erik, There's a simple answer: If you want to contribute, just do it. In the OSS world, you typically start by contributing patches to a codebase (which can either be for issues you discover yourself, or for fixes to existing issues), or by contributing other things to the project (such as documentation).
I'd suggest getting familiar with the codebase, and trying to tackle an issue from the issues list<http://code.google.com/p/fluent-nhibernate/issues/list> .
