I also no DSP expert,  i just like HQ audio and do for this what i can :) 
Possibly for general use we need small compression on peaks - we
get good dynamic range without clipping.
For professional use we need float output (and we have it for jack and
alsa, but not for file) - in this case we can set gain 0.1 (or smaller)
and get perfect dynamic range without any clipping.
