the voice-stealing method. It's a very minor code change, and might be
worth adding to the pile for 1.1.1. Obviously, a more elegant
voice-stealing solution should be considered for the future, but the
small change I proposed does help a bit.

That does seem like a good improvement. The voice stealing algorithm
definitely needs to be improved and I was thinking of making that one
of the main items on this next development cycle, in addition to
improving performance as a result of the thread safety changes.
I think that change is a good bandaid for 1.1.1.
