For background: The uPortal manual wiki spaces have taken this alphabetizing of child pages as a "feature" by prefacing page names with numbers to get Confluence's auto-generated children listing and tree navigation to reflect a book-like manual navigation.
Not everyone loves the result, and it's still a work in progress, but it's an approach.
