Hi Alison,

Thanks so much for you input on this. It is timely as we have a task to rewrite the reordering design patterns.

We were thinking of the uPortal example you point to as reordering a layout as opposed to reordering things in a "list". So the thinking was that in the uPortal example it was important for users to see what the layout would look like after the move. In the image example, we felt it was less important to see the layout but very important still to see where the image would be dropped. Because you could have hundreds of images in your gallery using an image avatar to indicate the drop target would mean the images move around a lot -- each time we have to make space for the avatar. With the line there is no need to shift things until the user is ready to "drop" the image.

I'm wondering if there is a something else we can do to make things less ambiguous. Can you say more about what you mean? The horizontal line should appear between two images (or at the end or beginning of the line) where the image will be dropped. Is the red line ambiguous or where the drop will happen?

Thanks again,

Daphne

Hi,

It's Alison Benjamin, I am a student volunteer with Fluid focusing on testing components with Justin. I am a Masters of Information student doing this work as a part of an Inclusive Design Lab I am taking with Steve Hockema at the University of Toronto. If I haven't met you in a stand-up meeting, in a chat, or in person, hello.

Here is a thought I have about the image re-orderer.

One thing I have found difficult is that when moving images with the mouse, it is hard to tell which target you are aiming at. I think this is because the target is indicated by the red horizontal line. Sometimes this makes the target ambiguous.

I think it is more precise to have the target surrounded by a shape. For example on this page:

http://build.fluidproject.org/fluid/sample-code/shared/portal/portal.html

when you drag an element around (e.g. Bookmarks Portlet) the potential target locations for it are surrounded by a red dotted line and a pink background - I really liked that.

Thanks
