hi daniel,
that popup control is actually a pre-built control by apple that is from
(strangely enough) the Automator.framework called AMPopUpButton.

The control is somewhat obscure (even though its generally useful, it's
tucked away in the Automator framework), and I've often noticed small bugs
in it.

But it provides exactly the behavior i want, and works reasonably well. And
also would take some time (yet little benefit) to duplicate.

so bottom line, I wont be recreating that control. :-/
