two recent music discoveries courtesy of the Redmond, WA Public Library:

Frederic Rzewski - odd pop/mimimalist composer who has two pieces on a 1983
Hungarian CD by Group 180 performing work by Tibor Szemzo, Steve Reich,
Laszlo Melis and the aforementioend FR, . Both pieces "Coming Together" and
"Attica" are like nice repetitive chamber peices with a vocalist sort of
talking over the music. He sort of repeats the politicised lines over and
over, with a little more embellishment each time and a little more
impassioned each time coming to a climax at the end. Reminded me of parts of
"Einstein on the Beach" or Michael Nyman's "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for
a Hat"
Excellent delightful stuff.

John Lennon/Yoko Ono - Unfinished Music No. 2 Life with the Lions
This is probably old hat to a lot of you but new to me. The first piece,
Cambridge 1969 is absolutely amazing, probably the most evocative musical
work I've heard from her. I'm not real fond of her pop rock work, but this
is heavy stuff. Reminds me of some of the stuff by the Swans, in its large
monolithic power and a sort of male/female dynamic. Yoko's simultaneously
meditative/hysterical moaning and shrieking and John's decidedly droney
impressive guitar noise work in perfect harmony with each other. It loses
something when other musicians come in toward the end. In fact its as if
they work in harmony with each other better than with the rest of the world,
which made me think it a profound statement about marriage.
