Januar 2000, von 17 bis 21 Uhr mchte ich Sie herzlich einladen. 22.01.2000 - 26.02.2000 Galerie EIGEN + ART Auguststr. 26, 10117 Berlin Di - Fr 14 - 19 Uhr, Sa 11 - 17 Uhr Back Catalog is the first presentation of Christine Hill's work in the gallery since her debut in 1995. Taken from the music industry, an artist's "back catalog" is the term for collected works - all of the material made prior to that which is "current". In effect, the artist's complete vocabulary. In Webster's dictionary, the term "back catalog" is conspicuously absent. Hence, Christine Hill has decided to define the term for herself, and for the viewer. Furthermore, Back Catalog continues the work ethic set up in the workshop Volksboutique and promotes good health, good clothing and happiness. Public Notice(s). The entire length of the gallery's left wall is covered with a somewhat excessive version of Hill's "Public Notice" - hand stamped posters advertising various ideas concerning production. They promote projects currently running, and advertise projects that Hill would very much like to realize, but for which certain ingredients are still missing. She uses the gallery wall as a bulletin board to make that what she is searching for (i.e. "Guitarist needed for Band. No drugs. No posers") public. "Public Notice" is also aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and can be collected in groups of 10 posters or more. Collect them all. Bindemittel. Back Catalog refers to tying up loose ends and properly dealing with unfinished business. Symbolically, the band Bindemittel have found themselves back in the rehearsal room. Bindemittel performed full time from 1994-1996 in and around Berlin. Bindemittel play Sunday the 23rd of January, 2000 in Bastard, im Prater, Kastanienallee 7-9, Berlin Concert begins at 23:00, cost DM 7. We look forward to seeing you there. Christine Hill lives and works in Berlin and New York. She moved to Berlin in 1991 with a one way ticket via Airhitch for $180. She was returned to New York as the 1997-98 Berliner Senat Grant Recipient for PS1 Contemporary Art Center. She has moved house 7 times in one year. In 2000, she will be putting an end to this ridiculous transiency and perpetual feeling of homelessness - worse, officelessness. [Artist Statement] >From the desk of Volksboutique. cat*a*log> 1. list/register. 2. a systematic list of items with descriptive details; also: a book containing such a list. back> 1. the part of the surface opposite the front. 2. to, toward, or at the rear. in return or reply. 3. remote. overdue. not current. 4. support. uphold. form the back of. Organizational Venture is the new term to describe what this has all been about, the projects of Volksboutique and myself over the past few years. All other words having managed to capture the essence of the work and that is: the perpetual state of being overwhelmed, and attempting to maintain a personal and public balance between extroverted and introverted natures. Organizational Venture very aptly contains these qualities, and sounds good as it rolls off the tongue. It sounds like We Mean Business, and, we do. Back Catalog is that which describes this particular stopping point (as Duchamp would speak of 'stoppages'), January 2000, amidst projects and personal obsessions. Acloak which covers the Stand der Dinge, while disguising itself briskly as a Blick nach Hinten. "Cover your back", they say. Digging through the ever growing content of the Artslut Archive, more and more Schlsselwrter occur to me, and the entire process of cataloging production appears necessary and relevant. Influence. Motivation. Description. Definition. Lucy Lippard writes of the search for ground in multicentered societies in her work "The Lure of the Local" (1997), and it is also a serious occupation with being split between points of departure and bases of operation that drives most of this work. Or, as Conan O'Brien would say "Let's take a look..." Christine Hill Berlin, January 2000 Thank you for your interest in this work.
