LOS ANGELES AREA PARTICIPATION
Santa Monica, CA, --The first Edible Books High/Low Tea will be
held throughout the United States and Europe on 1 April 2000. All
edible books will be shown from 2 - 4 p.m. according to the appropriate
time zone, and at 4 p.m. there will be a high tea in which all books will
be eaten along with beverages such as tea and coffee. This project
was conceived by Judith A. Hoffberg, Gloria Helfgott, Beth Thielen and
Stephanie Later around the Thanksgiving table in California in
1999. This event will attract not only book artists, but all those
interested in food, books, and art. As a result, a large turnout is
expected in San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York where
the Centers are sponsoring large attractive events with juried
exhibitions and festivities. Smaller events will be held in
San Diego, Tucson and Iowa City.In Los Angeles, the Edible Books High/Low Tea will be held at the Sam Francis Gallery, Crossroads School for the Arts and Science, 1714 21st St., in Santa Monica. The exhibition will be held from 2 - 4 p.m. where all bookworks will be labeled for recognition of each artist. The consumption of the edible books will take place at 4 p.m. at the Gallery with coffee and tea being served. This event will be documented both by digital photography and by videotaping and many of the events will be online after the event. The menus for each venue are being collated by Umbrella Editions in Santa Monica for an eventual publication.
The website to link all the sites and venues hosting the Edible Book Event is:
http//www.geocities.com/books2eat
This event is supported by Umbrella Editions (Santa Monica) and Colophon Page (http://colophon.com). It will be recorded at different levels, due to the last minute creation of the art work, not to eat "past expiration date" book, and also the different limitations of each venue's technical equipment. Our website will link to the other websites where you can post your images before, during or after the event as it is deemed possible. On the website Beatrice Caron made a link to geocities for participants to be able to host their own free website. We would like to have digital pictures of some works and will post a selection on the menu website.
The Center for Book Arts in New York is having a juried exhibition fundraiser and will start the event at 4 p.m. (EDT) due to the convergence of several classes which will finish at that time. We also have participation in France and hopefully in England and Japan.. Columbia College in Chicago will also schedule a full-fledged Edible Books event, as will the San Francisco Center for Book Art, and small groups in San Diego, Iowa City and perhaps even Houston. We have two venues in France and are hoping for commitments from the UK and Japan.
Local artists such as Beth Thielen, Katherine Ng, Gloria Helfgott, Sue Ann Robinson and many more will make this event unforgettable. Press preview for the show will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Crossroads School Sam Francis Gallery in the Peter Boxenbaum Art Center on the 2nd floor. Metered parking is available on Olympic Blvd. west of 20th St. The gallery is located three blocks from Bergamot Station, a 10-minute walk.
This event has been organized by Judith A. Hoffberg, authority on artist books and editor and publisher of Umbrella: The Anthology, recently published by Umbrella Editions, which celebrates more than 20 years of publishing a newsletter, Umbrella, which highlights artist books and mail art throughout the world..
