Hmmm
I don't think I've ever heard Roland Kirk being referred to as comical
before
Beefheart did have a great sense of humour
He was a trickster
I do have all his mainstream records and quite a lot of
bootleg and other stuff (being a huge fan)
and can say that it's a shame he turned to art
His drawings and paintings have always been interesting
but never in the same league as his music
Interviews with his band at the time of Trout Mask Replica do tell scary
stories
of that period - how they were virtually prisoners while they rehearsed the
album -
one person being sent to the store once a week to buy some beans
Nevertheless I detect some affection for the period, too.
Beefheart claims he taught each musician every single note on the album
and that by the time they entered the recording studio
they knew the material so well they did it in one take
Funnily enough, like Roland Kirk, Beefheart also played several sax at the
same time
Hey - thanks for all the Sun Ra gen. I've never heard him - so that will be
my first stop
when I next visit a record shop
The Graham Bond Organisation and Julie Driscoll were both well known in
Britain in the seventies
(or possibly late sixties - my memory is hazy there)
I wouldn't have thought they had much to do with fluxicity or the art scene
though
Brian Auger and Julie's Driscoll's big hit
This Wheels On Fire was
the theme tune for Absolutely Fabulous
A huge hit sit-com in the UK which I believe was also popular in the States
Well, I'd better stop or I'll keep going
