The trick to Finnegan's Wake is to start in the middle and work outward.
(But I have read it front to back as well, every word...some words two or
three times in fact.)
Top 5 books (as of today 13 Sept. 2000)
(in no particular order) Fiction
Ulysses - Joyce
The Shy Pornographer - Patchen
Gravity's Rainbow - Pynchon
White Noise - Delillo
Almost Transparent Blue - Murakami
Special bonus choice! Spanking the Maid - Coover
I am fickle (read: neurotic) and this list changes constantly (ask me again
in 15 minutes...you'll see), but Ulysses almost always appears. Flann
O'Brien often makes an appearance, but not today.
And yours, pray tell?
