Scott:
The "Fake Ray Johnson Weekend" was in conjunction with the mail art
exhibit at the Wexner, as an adjunct exhibit to Ray Johnson's works
- and was a congress of mail artists - panel discussion, dinner
and the like. See:

I'm no expert, but I see the word "fake" as fantasy - taking on any
name, character, creating any postage stamp or artwork, whatever -
that one likes, but the "fake" label would be added to something
that exists or partially exists, and yet have a spirit of daring or
bravado. Labeling it a "fake" allows playfulness and fantasy
without sneakiness. For instance, I could be a "fake Jenny Holzer"
(first thing that comes to mind for some reason) and do word art
that might be derivative, yet I could flaunt it. Another example -
artistamps - are quite blatantly fake, (really do not need
admission as such) and yet some of them get through the mails as
real stamps. ta da da da da. Of course, I wouldn't do that.
I think the difference between what is "done" in most contemporary
art that is derivative is that it is not admitted. As I see it,
the playfulness of fluxus and dada allows the admission and allows
it to be carried away as a "fake" without restriction.
However, I am sure there are more learned souls than I on this
matter.
Best,
PK
