True yams are a tropical plant that need a long, hot, moist season. About the only areas that true yams can grow naturally in the U.S. is in Hawaii or on the southern tip of Florida. Grocery store "yams" are mis-named sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes can grow in most of the U.S. continental states, and are related to the morning glory.
