Hi Carol,
its one of these metric euro-sizes ;-)
- A4 is 21 x 29.7 cm
- 1 cm =0.3937 inch
- so it should be ~ 8.26 x 11.69 inch

This system is based on a piece of paper with a size of 1-square-meter and a relation 
from a to b with 1 : 1,414 (root2), proposed to be a very harmonic one.
By folding A0, you get A1, and then folding it to A2 and then folding it to A3 and 
then.... (just for the curious)
