The earliest trace of a related word goes back to a group of pre-Socratic philosophers 
who were labeled the fluxers since they believed in various forms of change (fire in 
actuality) as the basis for the world/universe. I actually learned this in an
ancient Greek philosophy class long before I was interested in Fluxus and its history.
