(The Petroleum Equipment Inst.itute ( HYPERLINK "http://www.pei.org" http://www.pei.org ) is campaigning to make people aware of fires as a result of "st.atic" (that is, st.atic electricity) and gas vapors at gas pumps. They have researched numerous cases of these fires. The results were very surprising: 1) Almost. all involved women. Most. men never get back in their vehicle until completely finished fueling. 2) Almost. all involved the person getting back in their vehicle while st.ill pumping gas. The fire occurred when they exited and went back to pull the nozzle out. 3) Some fires occurred before, during or immediately after the gas cap was removed and before fueling began.)
When you exit your vehicle, TOUCH METAL - the vehicle body, the pump island, safety bollards or even the pump body before you st.art to dispense gas. AVOID RE- ENTERING your vehicle while the pump is running. If you absolutely have to, TOUCH METAL AGAIN after you exit and before you pull the pump nozzle out. St.ay away from the nozzle during fueling if you can. The vapors are a health hazard. If you have to hold the pump nozzle, face away from it.
