Sorry if there was a misunderstanding, but I didn't say "don't speak unless
you know what you are talking about." I said, "It helps to know what you are
talking about before telling people what you know."
One of the world's great difficulties is that people often believe they know
something when they do not. It's a free country, so they all speak. Some of
them get elected. Others write to Fluxlist.
Even though you believe that you know about a Ph.D. program in art history
that was offered at UCSC when you attended the school, that doesn't mean
your knowledge about the program is correct. Even though you studied with
professors who took part in the program, you probably didn't pay much
attention to what they said about specific program details. It's very
different to say that there was a two-year course component in a Ph.D.
program than to say there was a two-year Ph.D. program. I doubt that you can
find information that a two-year Ph.D. ever existed anywhere in the UC
system. Since that is what you said, that is what I wrote about.
Normally, I wouldn't care about this kind of thing, but you posted the note
in a way that suggested you don't think much of art history, and the way you
posted suggested disrespect for those who bother with such things. Your
email ad for a diploma mill suggested the same thing. The tone of your
messages was that this is an easy field for the kinds of people that Brad
Brace believes are "failed artists." Suggesting that I could get an easy
Ph.D. in two years rather than by investing the time and effort that this
work really requires is another way of saying that.
If you do that, you've got to expect a response.
Like they say on an old record in my dad's attic, "Ding-a-dong-dang Blue

yes people can seem snippy when it comes to art but tis rude to say to
someone "dont speak unless you know what you are talking about". The
assumption is that no one speaks unless they think they know what they are
talking about. All I know is that when I attended UCSC in 1990 there was a
two year phd art history program- perhaps it is no longer and perhaps it

is right in that it is course work only. I did not take the program but I
took courses from professors who had. that is all. madawg
