IOU presents

Hothouse

An exhibition of sound and acoustics commissioned specially by Sefton Park Palm House Preservation Trust in Liverpool.

IOU presents Hothouse - a sound installation created from within the Palm House in Sefton Park, Liverpool. IOU artists are working with local

composers and technicians in The Palm House this week, experimenting with both the creation of sounds and the presentation of them within the glass

structure. Using contact microphones, the collaborating team will be

sampling the various elements available inside, including the plants

themselves. These will be used to create a sound environment for the

public when the exhibition opens the following week - Monday February 24th to Friday February 28th 2003 inclusive from 12 noon to 4pm.

Visitors to The Palm House will be able to hear a shifting soundscape of

sounds inspired and generated by the space itself. Mixed live, using the

recorded sounds, the composition will shift each day as each of the

artists takes a lead in the presentation and elements are added,

manipulated and shifted around the space.

The project is an opportunity to experience the results of a collaboration between IOU and local artists and technicians working in a variety of

different spheres. It sees the first time that Liverpool's Unity Theatre

technicians have worked in this way - outside their theatre space on Hope Street and without a more traditional set-up. Most of the equipment used will be brought in especially for the project and will be a mixture of high tech computer programmes and low tech microphones, speakers and

recorders.
