small anti-war protest ::::::::::: Whilst I appreciate the no war graphic which is like the no smoking sign with a bomb instead of a cigarette I wanted to make something using a graphic language that offers an alternative as well as condemning bombing. To this end I designed a postcard yesterday and Jane and I signed it and sent it to Tony Blair.
You can see the card at www.sol23.com I designed the card in Illustrator and am intending to make files of the design freely available via my site so others, if they wish, can use this card to send to their government officials in protest. I also hope to print a large batch to send to as many war supporters as possible to offer them a reasoned alternative. The card is inspired by a mail art way of working and whilst I imagine that it will just get thrown away when it arrives at Blair's home.........I'm hoping that it will be impossible to not read and thus obtain meaning from the graphic language of the sign on the card. We intend to send out some cards to government members each day until this war is over. I encourage others to take similar actions if they wish. Whilst this is no large-scale action I felt I had to do something and add a voice. We decided that the postcard is the best form for this as it is likely that any mail in envelopes may be automatically destroyed for fear of terrorism (anthrax etc.). It is important that any graphic language is aimed correctly so that even a quick glance will give the intended reading in terms of meaning. cheers, Sol.
