Oh gosh, it's been a long-running, inflammatory issue:
Rhizome came into prominence due to the extensive unpaid
efforts of online artists -- to then turn around and pay
salaries only to a few people at the top of this newly
formed ('non-profit') hierarchy and also charge artists for
the 'privilege' of contributing... well, that's just
insulting (and a little too reminiscent of the institutional
artworld abuse, we thought was left behind). They lost a
boat-load of subscribers and a host of goodwill, doing that.
