FLUXLISTers, please welcome Doug Blandy.
Doug is the Director of the Arts and Administration Program at the
University of Oregon as well as Director of the Institute for Community
Arts Studies at the University. He teaches courses such as Art and
Community, Art and Human Values, and Zines and Do-It-Yourself Democracy.
The institute publishes an e-zine called "CultureWork."
Here is what Doug says about his interest in Fluxus:
"I have a long interest in Fluxus and while living in Columbus, Ohio,
during the late 70s early 80s became familiar with the work of John
Bennett. My current interest in Fluxus is associated with research I am
doing around a loose knit coalition of community activists and
organizations advocating a DIY lifestyle to counter the effects of
corporate industrialization and mass consumption. With an 'out there' or
'in your face' attitude, DIY activists promote an ethic that demands that
the arts and culture be free from control by large national and
multinational corporations. The manner in which DIY materials are created,
distributed, and valued provides insight into the cultural dimensions of
DIY. In this regard I am considering DIY in relationship to the larger
history of communities of resistance as well as how it is influenced by
Surrealism, Dada, the Situationists, Fluxus, and punk rock."
