Fluxlisters,
Thank you, Suse, for posting an excerpt from Ken Friedman's obituary on Dick Higgins. Mr. Friedman developed his Twelve Fluxus Ideas in a dialogue with Mr. Higgins, and these ideas go back to an earlier set of criteria that Mr. Higgins created to understand what Fluxus meant.
Higgins and Friedman are two examples of the infomed reflection that we believe interests some of the more interesting Fluxus artists.
We sent the issue of Fluxlist Digest with Madawg's revised version of the Twelve Fluxus Ideas. he answered. We liked his answer so much that wr asked permission to pass it on. With Mr. Friedman's permission, here is the relevant part of his letter to us.
Sincerely,
Secret Fluxus
Thanks for this revised edition of my Twelve Fluxus Ideas in the latest issue of Fluxlist Digest. I'm not quite sure how to take it. Let me simply say that I wouldn't have interpreted the twelve ideas in quite the same way.
There is a tradition of harsh outbursts when someone raises questions on Fluxlist. That's why I left. It's not enough for some people to have a list where they are free to post their own work. They seem to resent any interest in other kinds of work.
The cast of characters on Fluxlist has probably changed a great deal since I left. I don't know Madawg, but I value your projects and the work you have been doing. Some might say that I have this view because I am one of the artists to whom you have been extremely generous. I'd like to believe that my appreciation for your approach goes beyond this. I have always given much time and attention to the work of other artists I admire, and I value your dedication to their work as well. It always seemed to me that Fluxlist would benefit from a little more discussion of Fluxus and Fluxus ideas. If you are sharing your projects on Fluxlist, you are doing something to make the list better.
> We subscribed to Fluxlist hoping for something better.
