A DELUXE COPY

291, no. 1
New York: Haviland, 1915
Folio, wrappers, 6pp. Front and rear covers by de Zayas as full-page,
hand-colored lithos, in the deluxe edition on heavy vellum paper. Articles
by Stieglitz, Agnes Meyer, Paul Haviland, a calligram by Apollinaire, an
image by Picasso, and a page of prose lambasting critics and the public
climate towards modern art. This copy has two creases from folding
(presumably for mailing) and the cover fold is loose, but the whole is else
very good. Alfred Steiglitz published 291 a journal devoted to the work of
modern artists in New York (the first such publication in the city) and
named it after his gallery (in turn named after the street number). It is
one of the most seminal of art journals and inspired many others including
Picabia's later 391. All issues are extremely rare as it is documented that
only 30 or so were sold at the time and the rest of the run were left to the
printer to cover the costs of production, and soon thereafter recycled by
him as pulp.

AN UNIQUE FLUXUS BOX

Anderson, Eric 720108. Unique Fluxus box c. 1967. Unique work. 8.4 x 12.4 x 3cm plastic transparent box content of various small pieces of paper which all carry random measurements glued or scotch taped to the box. The lid of the box can be removed. On the top of the box is a 4 x 10cm adhesive label which has the title number "720108" on it and is signed in pencil by Anderson. Underneath the box is another label with Andersen's then address in Denmark. A unique work, this is clearly related to various multiples and other works created by Andersen that consider random distances and numbers. The upper address label is a little stained with glue as well as browned but overall this is in fine condition given the relatively rough and ready workmanship deliberately utilised by Andersen.

UMBRELLA. March 1972
Edinburgh: Demarco Gallery, 1972
19 x 9.5cm, which opens to a 2pp sheet of 38 x 72cm. An important single
issue of this gallery publication that has a very important short text
noting the success of Beuys' first ever London exhibition at the
Whitechapel. The cover image is subtitled "Joseph Beuys: the Phenomenon
Hits London" the cover image is of Beuys talking to gallery owner Demarco
and internally are three b/w reproductions of photographs of Beuys
installing 'The Pack' for the first ever time in the Edinburgh College of
Art (interestingly the photos show the arrangement used in the current Tate
modern installation to be too uniform and organised). Other articles include
a long article on Margaret Tait the film-maker and more parochial Scottish
artists mostly since forgotten. Formerly owned by Fluxus artist Robin
Crozier. Fine and scarce.

Brouwn, Stanley
BERLIN - POTZDAMMERPLATZ. Unique work 16.02, / 20. 11. 1969.
Four different 8,4 x 8,9 cm black and white photographs taken by Brouwn and
one appropriated offset lithograph postcard (14.2 x 10.4 cm). Each
photograph is signed and dated and the postcard additionally entitled in ink
by Brouwn. On the two dates Brouwn (who was showing at the Rene Block
Gallery) went to the centre of Berlin and took the rather blurry and dark
photographs of the square at different intervals during the day -
photographs which display the dark oppressive centre of the city with the
Berlin Wall an ominous and shadowy presence when compared with the busy and
vibrant picture postcard. Brouwn then cut a passeporteau out of cheap paper
for both the card and the four photographs and displayed them on the walls
of the Gallery. The two papers are still present here although the
photographs and card are no longer mounted on them (but to re-mount them
could be easily achieved). This is a fine example of an unique original work
by Brouwn. Full provenance available. Images attached.

THE RICHARD DEMARCO GALLERY. March 1972
Edinburgh: Demarco Gallery, 1972
25 x 15cm, 3pp (printed recto only). The gallery's newsletter that also
acted as the exhibition catalogue for the shows. Here the newsletter notes
three shows which include Hamish Fulton's third ever one person show (after
shows at Konrad Fischer and Gallery Sperone). Bizarrely while the other
panels of the other two artist's exhibiting that month are complete with
text and b/w images, the Fulton panel is left blank with only the artist's
name noted at the top although one is tempted to suggest a printer's mistake
since the panel next to Fulton's is also sans text and the b/w image of a
rocky outcrop looks suspiciously like a Futon photograph of the period and
is perhaps been laid down wrongly during the design - but we cannot vouch
for this being the case. A very scarce document if a little uninformative.
