Ruchreim, Ulrich
A GROUP OF INSTRUCTION DRAWINGS AND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS
In the period 1979 - 1981 Ulrich Ruchreim visited Edinburgh and Scotland on
the invitation of Graeme Murray the gallerist to prepare for two exhibitions
- one in the Murray Gallery and another in Edinburgh's well known
publicly-owned Fruitmarket Gallery.
We offer here a number of instruction drawings and sketches prepared by
Ulrich Ruckreim and his assistant for the creation of two large sculptural
works in situ for the Murray gallery and two initially proposed for the
Fruitmarket Gallery but in fact created for a slightly earlier Konrad
Fischer show. In addition, included here are various documents relate to the
purchasing of quantities of slate from a quarry in Scotland to which Graeme
Murray introduced Ruckreim - and used, thereafter, by the artist in a
series of important works in slate (where before predominantly stone and
wood had been mostly used in the artist's oeuvre).
As noted above, while two drawings offered here are exact instruction
drawings for works in stone for Konrad Fischer in 1979; the other series of
drawings intriguingly show a work in development for the Murray show - from
an original rough sketch created by Ruckreim on a beermat during a drinking
session, to a more considered drawing in pencil with measurements and
refinements, to a fully created final sketch of the work (albeit by
Ruckreim's assistant under Ruckreim's guidance). Documentation of the final
form of the work is also offered here as a colour photograph of the final
installation.
The items offered herein are as follows - ordered by date of execution /
document:
10.5cm dia commercial beermat with a blue ink sketch of an untitled slate
work, produced during an informal meeting with Graeme Murray and Ulrich
Ruckreim in an Edinburgh bar in 1979. This was the first incarnation of this
work which eventually became the slate work installed in the Murray Gallery.
This was drawn in 1979. Apparently Ruckreim spent his entire advance of 50
uk pounds from the gallery on a massive tray of Lephroig Whisky which was
shared by all while he drew ideas. The mat, unsurprisingly, is stained with
beer and whisky. Image attached.
added:
30 x 21cm 1pp drawing, ink on cream paper displaying two instruction
drawings for works in Dolomite stone as proposed by Ruckreim for the
Fruitmarket Gallery show in 198. The two drawings were created at the same
time in 1979 but the works were conceived in 1977 and 1979 respectively
(dates Ruckreim has written against each drawing). Both works are reproduced
in the catalogue for the proposed show despite having been produced
elsewhere (the catalogue was produced in advance of the installation in the
show so Ruckreim supplied works already created for Fischer ie these two).
The paper has been folded in the middle and mounted on hard cardboard.
added:
Two documents from McGlashen Quarry - an advice note and an invoice both
dated 1979. Here Ruckreim purchased slate for the Murray Gallery work
following a joint visit to the quarry by Murray and the artist. The artist
was inspired by the work of the quarriers and the way they split the slate
(and stone). The order relates to the slate which Ruckreim used to complete
the work initially conceived on the beer mat. The slate was later shipped
from Murray's Gallery to Germany and the work was produced by Ruckreim's
assistants. Ruckreim continued to use slate from the quarry throughout the
1980s and '90s - with one particular later installation in the Hamburg
Deichtorhallen requiring a massive order of Scottish slate.
added:
13 x 17cm pencil on paper drawing. Produced in 1981 by Ruckreim this is a
modification of the beermat drawing. The work is entitled "Oben und unten
natur". The work however was again altered by Ruckreim after this point
despite the detailed measurements etc on the drawing. The paper has been
mounted on hard cardboard.
added:
Two letters dated 1981 from Ruckreim's studios written by Alistair Cameron,
Ruckreim's assistant. The handwritten letters are both 21 x 15cm, 4pp. One
concerns the completion of the work with a sketch of the final version and
detailed descriptions of how Ruckreim wanted the piece installed (which
apparently Cameron didn't think would be easy). The first letter has the
final form of the work as a plan in an ink sketch on page 2, the second
letter details the work over two centre pages in pencil, and drawn to scale
as a three-layer plan and elevation.
added
Exhibition catalogue from 1981 Fruitmarket Show with the works
"Dolomit-stone split and cut" and "Dolomit-stone split and dressed"
reproduced in b/w full page. The catalogue is "New directions in
contemporary art and music" for the exhibition in which Ruckreim eventually
displayed different works but the works displayed are the Fischer works that
are offered above. The use of these photographs came from the gallerys need
to produce the catalogue 2 months before the show, Ruckreim used the works
he had meant to display in the show as illustrative of his work but provided
a more recent work display. The photograph however clearly shows the
original instruction drawings was not modified.
added:
30 x 21cm colour photograph of the Ruckreim work "Oben und unten natur"
installed in the Graeme Murray Gallery at the 1981 show. The work is exactly
as described and drawn in the Cameron drawings ie there were no further
alterations or changes.
Total for all documents, letters and four drawings together - 1,500 uk
pounds

CONTRAT. Preservation des Droits de l'Artiste.
NYC: s.p. (Siegelaub), 1972?
8pp folded contract (opens to 60 x 44cm, 2pp) designed to improve the rights
of artists and give them certain rights - including a 15% cut of any
financial exchange. Siegelaub's desire was to diminish the role of dealers
(hmmph!) and give art back some of its purity. The failure of the venture
lead indirectly, and in part, to his decision to retire as a major influence
in the world of contemporary art. This copy is signed in ink by Siegelaub
and is a very fine copy of this now scarce document. Other copies were
produced in English and German. It is not lost on us that the contract
states: "Cette feullille n'est pas a vendre". Now rare.

RITUS CONTRA DEPARVATION.
Munich: Gruppe Spur, 1965.
30 x 52cm. Single blue sheet folded to comprise three printed sections.
First issue of this collaborative protest by the dissenting and excluded
voices of the mostly German Spur group members and the Danish Bauhaus
Situationists Gordon Fazarkerly & Jorgen Nash. Composed of a manifest
co-signed by Beldeney, Gasche, Kunzelmann & Zimmer (of Spur), a poem by
Fazarkerly & a second manifest authored by Jorgen Nash and signed by Jens
Jrgen Thorsen, Hardy Strid and Ambrosius Fjord. (The latter being Thorsens
much used pseudonym to allow him indirect public criticism of Debord when he
wished.) The activities of the Danish Second International were anathema to
Debord because of their refusal to end artistic activities including
exhibitions and public performances (thus presumably adding to the
Spectacle). Folded as issued. Fine estate. VerRare.

THE WORD'S THE THING
A rare, part run of 14 numbers and one hors series number of Trocchi's Sigma
Project and a single relatively unknown and undocumented issue. Trocchi
tried to create a new direct relationship between reader and writer within
the confines of this cheaply produced magazine. The authors adherence to
the Situationist International and his links to many artists, poets,
playwrights, political theorists and significant members of the counter
culture made these some of the most influential political texts in English
available at that time. Individual copies of the Sigma Portfolios in good
condition are hard to find, difficult to identify and a good run of early
issues are particularly valuable.

London: Project Sigma, 1964.

the project became unfeasible. The Burrough's text is conjoined with "The
Barbecue" by Trocchi, and other smaller contributions. Apart from the
folding, very good copy of this hard to find item.

exemplary for the delightful series of designs created by Toyen (ne. Marie

INVITATION TO THE DANCE. Unique work. May 2003
15 x 21cm, blue, yellow, red, black and silver ink on paper - signed,
titled "Invitation to the dance" and a quotation - "Anglosaxinated" is
placed above a directional arrow displacing the text towards two open spaces
in a silver wall. Given the geographical location of the works place of
sale (Glasgow, Scotland) during a period of political debate over Scottish
independence, it is tempting to see the work as a comment on English
imperialism over their Northern neighbours. Fine. Image on request. Full
