For Immediate Release: RECENT WORKS BY MIA YOON AND DAVID COLAGIOVANNI
AT GLANCE GALLERY RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA: Glance Gallery is pleased to
announce the opening of their new show featuring works by Mia Yoon and
David Colagiovanni on Friday, March 17, 2006 from 7-10 pm.
Mia Yoon?s current work challenges the viewer to experience it in terms
of a three-dimensional space. The spray and roller techniques she uses
in her two dimensional pieces cause the viewer to strive to focus their
eyes in spite of their conscious understanding that it will not come
into crisp focus. The bright, vivid colors invite the viewer to step
away and be drawn toward the piece in a physical interaction. While
even her paintings seemingly glow from within, the principle piece in
the show, ?Dancing Spirit?, a wall sculpture made of Mylar and oil
paint, glows with the light of many fluorescent light bulbs. The result
is a piece that evokes a calming effect on the viewer.
David Colagiovanni draws inspiration from the everyday. The featured
piece in the show, ?Simultaneous Portraits or Danger Music #2: For
Dick. (A Tribute to Dick Higgins), is based on Fluxus artist, Dick
Higgins? 1962 performance piece, Danger Music #2 in which the score
simply reads ?Scream!? The subjects in Colagiovanni?s version of the
performance are oblivious to the camera and evoke an intense
emotional reaction in the viewer. The piece paralyzes the viewer,
causing them to feel more voyeuristic than observant. Other pieces in
the show are from Colagiovanni?s ?Video Journal?, a weekly video
sketchbook that allows him to light-heartedly explore concepts and
ideas. He is a member of the live media collective Immediate Theatre
and his work can be viewed at www.unc.edu/~colagiov and you can
subscribe to his Video Journal Podcast at www.thevideojournal.com
Mia Yoon was born in Seoul, South Korea. She attended the Pratt
Institute in New York and studied at the Art Students League. Her work
has been shown throughout North Carolina and in Georgia. David
Colagiovanni received a BFA in Sculpture at the University of Maine,
Orono, and an MFA from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2005. He has shown his work
throughout the United States.
The show will run until April 19th at Glance Gallery, located at 311 W.
Martin St. Raleigh, North Carolina 27601. Hours of operation are
Monday through Friday 9-6, and Saturday 10-5. For more information,
