Hello Artists From Be Blank!
Rich Grula, your humble curator writing here. Please forgive the
tardiness of this reply. I had meant to write weeks ago, but things
happened and then last week I underwent an emergency appendectomy
surgery. After five days of morphine and hospital jello, I'm home
again, picking up the pieces. So much fun, ya know?
Anyway, the BE BLANK SHOW was launched at DMAC, UCF's Downtown Media
Arts Center in Orlando in mid-March to a mix of insane support and
general confusion. That was to be expected though as we're talking
about an empty gallery with nothing but little cards on the wall.
Some people popped into the gallery and literally stopped dead in
their tracks, looked around and fled as fast as their feet would
carry them. Some people refused to believe a show was hanging, no
matter how much wine I poured. Such is an Orlando art crowd.
But a lot of people got the whole thing. They'd start reading the
pieces, get into it, read everything, pick favorites and discuss with
their friends. The most enthusiastic would then make suggestions for
additions in the theme of the show. My fave suggestion was renting an
"gallery audio tour cassette" with nothing but white noise on the
tape. That guy really got the show.
You can read a bit more as well as see all the pieces at the DMAC web
site, www.dmacorlando.com. Click on the Art Exhibits link. The pdfs
there (yes, I fixed the links recently) show each of the pieces of
the show. In the spirit of the show, I've made it possible for
anyone to own a piece from this show. All they need is some blank
wall space to complete the effect.
Anyway, many thanks for your contributions. You helped make an
interesting idea and wonderful reality and really redefined "content"
in the process.
