Memoria [P] Presente: A Homage to Pedro Garhel (1952-2005)

A homage to Pedro Garhel has been programmed at the MediaLabMadrid the following 20th and 21st of April

Pedro Garhel was one of the key figures in Spanish contemporary and media art, and a crucial figure for understanding the independent art scene in the Madrid of the late 1980's and early 1990's.

He founded the "Espacio [P]" independent art space in Madrid in the early 1980's, which proved to be one of the few areas where then-marginal art practices like video, performance art and new media could be seen, and also a crucial place to meet and exchange ideas for artists concerned with more "peripheral" (or shall I say "excentric" art practices) in the city.

Pedro Garhel taught live and new media art at the Fine Arts Faculty of the University of Salamanca, where he continued with his curatorial practices until his ill health interrupted his teaching activities in 1999. He died in 2005, aged 53.

The events programmed at the MediaLab include an exhibition of photographs, video, and audio works by Pedro Garhel, a Round Table with the participation of José Ramón Alcalá, Lola Dopico, Francisco Felipe, Marisa
González, José Iges, Valcárcel Medina, Karin Ohlenschläger and Tomás
Ruiz-Rivas, as well as a performance and sound art session at 19:30 on Friday the 21st of April, with the participation of Juan Belda, Javier Cólis, Ulises Pistolo Eliza, Rosa Galindo, Concha Jeréz, Guillermo Lorenzo, Sergio Molina, and Fernando Suárez Cabeza.

The art scene in Madrid in the past couple of decades would have simply not been the same without him.
