Hmmmm, I may have a lead on this.

I replaced some of the relevant libraries with alternatives that had
promising names like "-extra" and "-unstripped" in Synaptic (which seems
fine and apparently they use the same "-dev" one), then ran scons -c and
recompiled and re-installed. I was expecting that to affect the
fluxus-video_ss.so but it didn't. Instead it only created a new version of
fluxus-artkp_ss.so" and placed that with the compiled libraries. This is a
bit odd to me because according to the docs it's not the artkp addon that
depends on these but the video extension, which artkp depends on in turn. I
would expect that switching the libraries for the ffmpeg stuff would affect
fluxus-video first.

A bit strange. Does that get us anywhere?
