I agree that most of the time we probably want to map extra-musical data
onto a fixed scale, and your example is very nice. I used a similar
concept in a Max patch that mapped data from accel and gyro sensors
attached to a yoyo.

But I can see uses for the opposite approach too, mapping data onto
microtonal notes even in unusual scales.

Perhaps it would be beneficial to implement an (allow-microtonal [#t or
#f]) option?
