In general disc drags have lower startup inertia which
can help protect your tippet when the fish bolts,
stops, and bolts again. Disc drags adjust fast and
smoothly even during a fight, most click/pawl I've
seen are either too slow or too clunky in that
department, although there may be some good ones out
there.

For freshwater use where the battles are generally
measured in seconds rather than minutes either is
fine. I'm sure there are disc drags that are real
dogs and click/pawl that are superb. I know I was
messing with a low priced Okuma the other day that had
virtually no startup inertia, whereas even some high
end reels I've played with have enough that it is
really noticeable.
