Hi guys,
I'm just trying to work through this interesting thread but wanted to comment 
on this.

For the @Filenamepart() function I have a workspace that uses it in 
AttributeCreator...

Attribute       Value
filedir @Filenamepart(DIRNAME, @Value(fme_dataset))
filename        @Filenamepart(FILENAME, @Value(fme_dataset))

...making sure that fme_dataset is exposed at source.
It's a cool thing being able to use functions within transformers. No mess, no 
TCL. 

Well OK, it is a little messy, but it works.

Browsing the documentation for the new relase i discovered the
@Filenamepart() function, with this function we dont have to use tcl at al. 
On the other hand  it is not implementet in a transformer so we still have to 
use tcl.
