Title: Google Earth and FME

Hello Larry, others,

You can use any version of google earth:

Google Earth Google Earth Plus Google Earth Pro

Any of those are equally as good, they all seem to open KML files the same way.

Note as well, the google earth part of this announcement actually has nothing to do with the google maps part – as Mark indicates, the google maps part is almost certainly a toy only (but we’ll happily give the _javascript_/java code to anyone that might be interested in playing further with it).  But the kml writing for google earth is a lot more interesting (and has nothing to do with google maps).

Lastly, we’re going to automatically reproject data headed to KML to lat/long in the future, so all that will be required is that the data be coordinate system aware so we can do this reprojection.

Have fun!

Dale

PS:  For those that don’t know, you go to http://earth.google.com/ to get your google earth free copy.

Hi Mark;

Which version of Google Earth do you need to use to try uploading your own kml files?

Thanks Larry

Forgot to mention - if you're writing to KML you must use LL84 as the destination coordinate system.

Hi FME'ers,
Don and Dale asked me to suggest you check out FME's newly developed ability to mesh with Google Earth and Google Maps.

See our web site at… http://www.safe.com/google/index.php

We have a downloadable patch to add support for Google Earth's KML format and a demonstration of using FME to add data to Google Maps.

At this point the technology is extremely experimental (my experience is that it's just a long-winded way to close my web browser) but it's well worth checking out and we'd certainly appreciate any suggestions or feedback.

There are a lot of people who think the future direction of GIS is open source, open APIs, free data, free web services; applications that are not installed, but accessed through a browser - and the common reaction among these folks when shown an FME/Google demo is to become very excited and run around a lot shouting "this is [EMAIL PROTECTED] incredible" - I expect existing users to be more blasé about what FME can do, but you have been warned!

Google maps is accessible via… http://maps.google.com/

Google Earth can be downloaded for free from http://earth.google.com/

You'll need FME2005 to be compatible (nothing older and not a 2006 beta either) - so here's a great reason to upgrade to FME2005 right now. If you're still unsure see http://www.safe.com/2005/index.php for another 1500+ good reasons to use FME2005.

If you want to read more I'm told an article about the technology will be published in Directions magazine on Friday.

Enjoy,

Mark
