You are correct about Workbench using shared directories, but I think
you're missing a piece of the functionality of these shared
directories. There are several sub-directories that Workbench looks
for when you point it to a shared directory. As the workbench dialog
explains
"The sub-directories must be named 'Transformers', 'Formats', and
'Coordinate Systems'."
If those directories are not present, Workbench will display a dialog
box that reads "The selected directory '{path to directory}' does not
contain the required subdirectories. Do you wish to create them?" If
you select Yes, it attempts to create those directories. If you select
no, it assumes that you will create them yourself.
I hope this clears up any confusion.
