Hello FME'ers,
There were some recently requests for the ability to encrypt or otherwise protect FME workspaces, formats and transformers, so I'm pleased to be able to report that this functionality has been included in the latest beta version of FME 2006-GB (build 2579 onwards).
I'm told that you may protect workspaces (.fmw), custom formats (.fds) and custom transformers (.fmx). Open the file for editing in Workbench then set a password using the new 'Workspace Settings' part of the navigation pane.
Setting a password protects the file from being viewed or edited unless the password is entered, and causes it to be saved in an encrypted form so it cannot be opened in a regular text editor.
Such files can still be run within FME Universal Translator (File->Run) or from the Command Line (fme <workspace_name>.fmw).
You should be aware that the level of encryption is relatively low, and that a highly skilled and really determined user might find a way to break it. We're offering no guarantees that it will be 100% effective. However, we think it should be suitable for most FME related activities.
I hope that you find this new functionality useful,
Regards,
Mark
