OK - the reasoning is this....

There is a dataset setting labelled 'Audit and Fix Errors' in the
navigation pane of Workbench. This function audits the data as it is
written to DWG and fixes any problems. The trailing space is a problem
and the fix is to change the layer name.

Because the audit tool is part of the Autodesk API, we don't have much
control over it except to turn it on or off.

The solutions:

1) Trim trailing spaces as previously described.

2) Change the 'audit and fix errors' setting to NO. This will write
the layers with a trailing space. HOWEVER - when you open them in
AutoCAD it may cause a problem. For sure if you run the audit tool in
AutoCAD it will rename the layer just as FME is doing.

I hope this helps to explain the situation. I spoke to our developer
and he's unwilling to make a change (eg to trim spaces automatically)
when some users might be relying on the existing behaviour. If anyone
in the group has strong thoughts on this let us know.

Mark
