Thanks very much for the suggestion!  I tried using the 
PointOnLineOverlay  again, and it partially works.  The issue is that 
there's no way to be sure that the sequence number joined to the line 
from the closest point is the correct one and in the correct sequence 
number.  

Since the sequence is based on direction from a starting point, I'm 
wondering if there might be another way of getting a result.  Would it 
be possbile to split the line still using PointOnLineOverlay but then 
just assign a counter to start at one(1) from the starting point, and 
just count each split route segment that was output by the 
PointOnLineOverlay ???

Hmmmm....looks like I have my Monday morning assignment. LOL
