I figured out a way to do this after reading the 'Database Tips and
Tricks' PowerPoint. The feature-based method worked for me.

Subject: [fme] SQL UPDATE
Hello,
I am having trouble figuring out how to perform a database
update using FME. There is some info on fmepedia, but I'm not seeing
where I can add a SQL statement to the writer.
http://www.fmepedia.com/index.php/Update_Database_Workspace
<http://www.fmepedia.com/index.php/Update_Database_Workspace>
What I am trying to do is join an MSSQL table to a shapefile's
dbf, then filter on one of the dbf's attributes, then set one of the SQL
fields to a value, then update the original table. So, right now I have
SQL Reader > Joiner > Attribute Filter > Attribute Setter > SQL
Writer
Everything seems to work fine except for the writing part.
Thanks,
