Dear Lyndon,
the problem is a bit tricky but it is that sort of typical practical
problems you again and again have to face with coordinates and map
sheets. Basically there are severeal solutions. Furthermore there might
not even be a general solution to the question "what is the NE
corner?" - it very much depends on the shape of the polygon. I guess
you have some sheets ordered geographically that should be displayed in
a geodetic coordinate system or similar, in which case the definition
of NE is clear. One possibility would be to transform the data in that
coosys and do the minmax there, transforming the minmax values back.
Another, more general, solution would be to do a simple sum of x and y
and a difference: say, u(i)=x(i)+y(i), v(i)=x(i)-y(i) where i is the
index of all points of that polygon. Then the point with the max of u
(i) should be the NE corner, the one with the min of u(i) the SW
corner, the max of v(i) indicates the NW corner, the min of v(i) the
southeast corner (hope I'm right with the signs...).
Hope this helps!
Wolfgang
