Hi Bob, Which FME version are you using? It seems to work for me in 2007, which is not a surprise to me since we've improved special character handling. Mind you, I tried it in 2006GB and it appeared to work there too.
Since I can't get it to fail, I'm not sure what to suggest except an upgrade.
