While removing some of the 40+ beta versions of FME I have on my
computer, I thought I'd catch up on some of the announcements and
bulletins I'm supposed to have made...
Safe has added a new raster format writer to FME. The USGS DEM writer
is now available for users running Professional Edition or better.
Reader/Writer documentation for the USGS DEM format has been updated
to accommodate the new writer as well.
Along with writer support for USGS DEM, raster development has updated
the USGS DEM reader. The upgraded reader can read the files specific
to newer versions of the USGS DEM standard in addition to being
compatible with existing legacy USGS DEM files.
Due to the nature of USGS DEM files, the USGS DEM writer requires
several attributes to be specified to completely populate in the
corresponding header fields in the document. Although FME will provide
suitable defaults for header values in the DEM files, the header
values are exposed as format attributes to allow the user to specify
these values directly.
With the advent of the additional fields being added to USGS DEM
standard, the writer will proceed to write different flavors of USGS
DEM files as appropriate. Should a user not specify the value for a
format attribute, and the corresponding header field is not necessary
for the older version of USGS DEM, it will be left blank if possible.
For more information about how attributes are handled, users may refer
to the USGS DEM documentation.
The USGS DEM writer is now available in the recent FME 2007 betas as
of build 4334+.
FAQ:
Q) FME tells me that I did not specify a coordinate system. Why is
this necessary?
A) The USGS DEM format supports a limited set of coordinate systems.
In order to ensure data integrity, a coordinate system must be
specified. FME will not guess what coordinate system is being used if
it is unspecified.
Q) Why does FME not recognize my coordinate system when the USGS DEM
specification indicates that it is supported?
A) Currently, FME supports a handful of the possible USGS DEM
coordinate systems, which conform to the following criteria:
- Horizontal Datum: NAD27, NAD83, WGS72, or WGS84
- Projection: LL, or UTM (TM)
- Units: Radians, Feet, Meters, or Seconds
