You could make another layout designed for printing only which had the
field in question at its maximum possible size with the slide fields
option checked so the field will only print as large as needed. Keep the
current layout, with the field as small as you wish.
Have the print script include switching to the print layout before
printing and then back to the shorter version for viewing.

fields to make them smaller, but is there a way that I can print a field on
a record that may be a full page long, without taking up all that real
estate? That field in one record may have just one sentence, and the next
record has a full page of text. When printed, I¹d like to see the full
content of that long one, while still only showing a 2² high field on my db
on the screen as I work. BTW, there¹s also fields below this.
